ABOUT THE SONG

This month's tune...."A Fisherman's Daughter"

After playing "A Fisherman's Daughter" one night at Froggys, a man walked up, told me he was a psychiatrist and handed me his card. "You need to see me", he said. "You've got issues".

Since that day I've always wondered if these are my shows you're coming to or interventions!

Aside from whatever that dude meant, I do get LOTS of questions about this song, especially if it's real, if I really dumped a chick on the altar. Come on gang, do I seem like that kind of guy? (Note: Please don't ask my ex-girlfriends that question!)

The inspiration for this song actually came from one of many wedding receptions I've played at one time , this one where everyone was glowing about how gorgeous the bride was, not knowing that when their back was turned she was a complete b#&*ch to the hired help all around her. I looked at the groom and thought you poor sucker, you're in for a lifetime of this crap. In the meantime, the muchachas who were hired to prepare and serve the food were sweating their butts off in the kitchen, but smiling, happy, and having a great time in the kitchen. I remember thinking how any guy would be lucky to have any of these girls. I went out to my tour bus (cleverly disguised as a Ford Escort Wagon) and wrote the song, thinking about what could have happened had the guy had a second chance (and more brain cells). The first line popped into my head, and the story just took off from there.

We're guys. We're stupid. We like pretty women. When we're young we really don't care if you have opinions. Or are smart. Or funny. Or really nice. But years go by and in spite of the public school system, you actually learn a few things. Like it's not when you're gal is all dolled up that matters....hell Rosie O'Donnell could probably look decent with enough makeup (OK, that may be pushing it).

Point is, looking good on the outside is the easiest part of all. But when you find a woman who can be laugh and smile through everyday ups and downs, one who loves you just the way you are regardless of whether you've got a Gold Card or a just an expired Burger King Birthday Club Card, one who looks like a million bucks to you in jeans and a T-Shirt without having to turn the world's heads with fancy dresses and jewelry, one who loves you not in spite of who you are but BECAUSE of who you are...then you've found "A Fisherman's Daughter"

(By the way, Elsa wants you to know her father is a wheat farmer, not a fisherman!)
